The Power of Skills #3

From crafting to satellite engineering.

One of our favourite examples of the power of skills comes from Angela Ashill who appeared on The Chase. She described how she moved from crafting to working as a satellite insulation engineer.

Her explanation was that they both involve making things!

The "shiny blankets" she now works on are multi-layer insulation used to protect satellites from extreme temperatures in space.

Different context.

But in many ways, the same work.

Measuring, cutting, shaping, fitting…

whether it's fabric at home or insulation on a satellite.

Angela Ashill

Because her previous work required:

  • Precision and attention to detail
  • Working with delicate materials
  • Pattern recognition
  • Patience and consistency
  • High standards of quality and finish

What didn't matter?

  • A traditional engineering background
  • Direct aerospace experience
  • A "perfectly relevant" CV

Exactly what's needed when building insulation where small mistakes can compromise an entire mission.

The domain specific knowledge could be taught.

The skill was already there.

When we define roles too narrowly, we overlook people who are already building the right skills… just in a different context.

This is exactly why we've built the talent platform we have and why our promise is to help you 'see what others miss'.

Incredible talent management from RAL Space - absolutely leading the way.
